BUILDING A VILLAGE PUMP

Saturday.—A remarkable story
of how a village water supply is being held
up because of the alleged defiance of a wo
man was told at Whitland (Carmarthen
shire) District Council when the Sanitary
inspector reported upon his fruitless efforts
to fix a pump at a well.
He stated that he took with him two
police officers, a mason and a fitter to a
site adjoining the woman's property at Lo
gin. While the' mason was building a wall
the woman would dash in between the pol
ice and undo' the work. • Afterwards. she
went to her. garden, eight feet above the
well, and procured a cask full of water
which she poured over them.
The work was ultimately completed, -but
an hour after their departure she is alleged
to have started to pull down the wall which,
by the following morning, was demolished.
The pump was, found, lying in the roadway.
A member of the Council said the woman
contended that the well was on private pro
perty. 'The Inspector said that, to his know
lodge the well had been a public one for
the last thirty-two years.
The Council decided to obtain legal advice
on the matter, '
